| Like a steel compensator a rubber compensator is a flexible element which is made of natural or synthetic rubber. For the reinforcement for example fabric, nylons or metals are used. Depending on the operating conditions the flanges are made of steel, stainless steel or rubber.
Rubber compensators significantly enhance the service life of pipelines and connecting equipment by absorbing thermal expansions and vibrations. Additionally many rubber compensators have outstanding noise absorbing qualities.
Rubber compensators are used in many industries because they have following characteristics:

Restraints Under pressure the compensator reacts in positive axial direction (effective surface x operating pressure). If a compensator is installed without restraints these movements are absorbed in the closest fixed points. The movements and forces will be absorbed by designing the compensator with restraints. The advantages of restraints are:
- The rubber element is prevented from breaking out of the flanges.
- Movements and forces are passed on to guides and anchor points.
- Lateral and angular movements or vibrations are absorbed.
